Brady Foundation Provides $720,000 in Grants for "I Have a Dream" Foundation and
Public Allies—Sept. 29, 2008

"I Have a Dream"
The Brady Corporation Foundation, along with Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett announced Brady’s participation in the "I Have a Dream" Milwaukee program. The Brady Corporation Foundation is investing $510,000 over the next 10 years to fund college educations (upon high school graduation) for second grade students at Clarke Street School in Milwaukee.

"I Have A Dream"-Milwaukee sponsors entire grade levels of students in under-resourced public schools and public housing developments. "Dreamers," children who have been sponsored, can now dream of attending college.

"The Brady Corporation Foundation is committed to leadership development in our communities," said Frank Jaehnert, president and CEO. "There is no better way to support leadership development than to ensure a positive start for our youngsters by giving them the building blocks they need to get the most out of their education."

"I Have A Dream" Milwaukee is much more than a guaranteed college education. It provides a year-round program of academic and family services for the Dreamers entire family. These services help to provide a stable environment for the Dreamers and help them with life choices as well as their studies throughout elementary school, high school and the first years of college. Dreamers often graduate high school and enter college at double or triple the rates of other students in the local population.

"We are looking forward to the long-term success of the Dreamers at Clarke Street School," said Frank.

Collaboration is at the heart of the "I Have A Dream" Milwaukee program. To provide a network of support for Dreamers and their families, the program brings together several community organizations, many of which Brady already works with and supports. Next Door FoundationBoys & Girls ClubsCenter for Teaching Entrepreneurship and Public Allies (2008 grant recipient announced below) are all sponsored by Brady’s Foundation and are all part of the Dreamers network.

Public Allies
In the area of Leadership development, Brady is granting Public Allies $204,000 over three years. Public Allies is an organization that prepares talented young adults from diverse backgrounds for careers working for community and social change. These Allies serve 10-month paid apprenticeships at local nonprofits and participate in a rigorous leadership development program.

The Foundation grant will fully fund two sponsorships, providing "Allies" for partner organizations "I Have A Dream" Milwaukee and Next Door Foundation's Leaders of Tomorrow programs. It will also partially sponsor 11 other allies over three years.

More than 80 percent of Public Allies alumni have continued careers in nonprofit and public service and they volunteer and engage in civic and political activities at more than twice the rate of their peers.

In addition to major multi-year grants, Brady and the Foundation contributed more than $200,000 in fiscal 2008 to support community organizations such as MSOE, WFIC, Glendale River Hills School Library, Elizabeth Lurie Fund for the Arts, La Casa de Esperanza, Mount Mary College Leadership Institute, Wisconsin Academic Decathlon, Milwaukee Ballet School and other organizations.
